Cast back in time to a perilous wasteland, Andrew is tasked with recording the fate of an individual history has chosen to ignore. Threatened by knee-high creatures called Wogs, an enigmatic beast known as the Forest Monster, and the man orchestrating the slow annihilation of the world, Andrew discovers all hope for salvation and survival rests with a boy without a history.

The Least Envied Songs Unsung Book 2 edition by Sean DeLauder Literature Fiction eBooks

The Least Envied follows the plight of a young boy who decides that he needs to fill the shoes of the hero absent from his town. He does his best to save the girl, defeat the terrible beast and make some allies along the way, but discovers that heroics aren't all they're made out to be.

DeLauder has a wordy and intricate writing style which at times was a melodic blessing, and occasionally became cumbersome when I wanted to get to the point of the text. Overall, the book was well written and I read it without getting too bogged down in the language. I must also state that I wasn't aware this was the second book in the series when I downloaded it (bleary eyed Kindle shopping at 3am will do that to you), but even without the first book I found this one to be a complete tale.

I settled on 3 stars because it was a good story, although it didn't grip me the way some do. I think DeLauder's voice is simply not my style, so the 3 stars is extremely subjective and you should take it with a grain of salt.

The Least Envied Songs Unsung Book 2 edition by Sean DeLauder Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

After reading the first few pages of The Least Envied, I knew this story
was going to be special. The opening plopped me into the world--I felt the
grit in my teeth and sensed the heat on my face. The immediate danger quickly
drew me in. This was an unusual world, somewhat similar to ours, but where
we are visitors. And we have a mission.

Intriguing characters are introduced. Some appear commonplace--like retired
men sitting outside a five-and-dime, except these folks hang out on
rooftops. From these old coots, our dive into philosophy begins. The first
topic, and one that drives much of the story, centers around the concept
of heroes--who they are, how we choose them, and what makes heroes
different from ordinary folks. But the story doesn't stop at simple
answers, nor single questions; making one's way in the world is far more
complex. This is an adventure full of mystery, trials, and self-discovery.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of this work is the humor. Sean DeLauder
continues his wry style that won my admiration in The Speaker for the
Trees . The characters are often fantastical, and their dialogue spot on
perfect wit. DeLauder is a master of quirk.

Essentially, what begins as a mission to record the life of one small boy
turns into a desperate struggle to save the world. One can, of course read
it as an intriguing story that readers of any age will enjoy, but
connections to current issues are evident for adults. In fact, I can
envision a parent reading this story to their child, much like Lord of the
Rings has been read for generations, and then that child will reread it in
adolescence, and again, in adulthood, read it to their own offspring.
Subjects are brought up and discussed in a way that initiates
discussion--such as taking personal responsibility for one's actions.

The journey here is long, allowing the reader to become immersed in a
strange and fascinating world. I quite admire the talent and effort
required to produce such a manuscript. I recommend that you go ahead,
treat yourself and begin the journey. It'll leave you exclaiming, over and
over again, "Amazeballs!"
This is a very original, captivating romp through an Alice in Wonderland sort of world with the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, and the Caterpillar all turned into extras from an old Western movie and discussing philosophy. First we meet Andrew, the writer, who falls into this world rather like Alice down the rabbit hole. The world is the “fabled West,” which is so dusty everything is seen through a haze. The ground is cracked and dry. The towns are in decay. Most of the forests are too. DeLauder describes this world in such convincing detail, you can almost taste the dust.

And it’s doomed. Which is where the boy called Billy-Bob comes in. He’s small and hunched and possibly crazy since he has conversations with inanimate objects yet he wants to be a hero. The writer has been sent from the future to write the boy’s story for history, maybe, if in fact the boy is a hero, which is hard for anyone to believe. There are also several non-human characters, some with wings who occasionally fly, some dilapidated robots of a sort, and some man-like beings who are so huge and powerful no one can defeat them. Some of these characters are evil, or maybe not. Good and evil as well as heroism isn’t simple here.

Billy-Bob wants to defeat Ultimate Evil, and many times he comes up against a threat that he has to try to confront, or maybe just try to run away from. So there’s a lot of action in this book, but I’m not sure anyone should read it for the action. What makes it unique is the ongoing ruminating of the characters about Hope, Evil, and, most importantly, Unless.

“Hope was always creating pleasantly ideological, and therefore impossible things.”
“Evil became invisible when it was everywhere.”
“Unless was a sword held carefully by the blade. A single slip and all the delicate designs could fall apart in a clatter of severed fingers.”
And in regard to what makes a hero “They’re tall, I suppose. So I’ve heard. Might have antlers.”

So there’s humor mixed with some rather thought-provoking musings. And there’s a complex plot. I enjoyed the musings and the bizarre characters, but I was pulled through the book because I kept wondering if the plot would actually come together in the end after so much wandering back and forth through this dusty, desolate world. I was given a review copy of the book, and I kept thinking it definitely deserved four stars but probably not five, because there was no way the author was going to pull this off. But DeLauder does tie up all the ends, and with a clever twist.
Very good book. Recommend this for any sci-fi fans.
love it..
I don't normally review books, but feel that if you are into sci-fi you should read this book. This was a book that is well worth the time to read and in the end I asked when will the next one be released. until
