In a time of wizards and kings, one name stood above the rest. He was Montechristien Groeneveldt.

He had been weak. He had been a failure. But beyond darkness, beyond damnation, beyond all suffering and all sorrow, he found the jewel of the philosophers. He found the pure and limitless magic of the cintamani — of the alchemic gold.

From that point forward his power was limitless. He bound the Devil, shattered suicide's son, and took wickedness as his bride. He grew butterflies on trees and timed life with flowers. He broke the world and sewed it up again. And as the time of his death approached his children came to his Castle to dispose of the matter of their legacy.

Violet, his eldest and most dear, who had betrayed him before she was even half-grown.

Francescu, the deathless sorcerer, who had turned his back on the affairs of the world.

Manfred, the fallen knight, whose strength was legend and whose spear was magic’s bane.

Tomas the cruel, who had looked in his tenth year upon the face of God.

Christine, the mad sorceress, who wandered the world in her living house.

Sophie the skinchanger, soulless and Devil-tainted, and once the one Montechristien had loved best.

Elisabet, the Devil’s child, a creature as much of shadow as of life.

When at last Montechristien stumbled towards the grave, the talents of his children turned against their siblings, every hand against the other, and the halls of Castle Groeneveldt ran with blood, until they could dispose of the matter of their legacy.

"Jenna Moran writes with barbs and delicacy the tales and legends you loved in your dreams, but thought you forgot upon waking."

An Unclean Legacy edition by Jenna Katerin Moran Humor Entertainment eBooks

Jenna Moran, most famous as the author of the tabletop role-playing game Nobilis, now gives us her first novel with an expanded version of one of the most popular stories from her short fiction site, Hitherby Dragons. "An Unclean Legacy" deals with the seven children of a wicked and all-powerful sorcerer, who have a bit of baggage to clean up as they decide who will inherit their father's limitless power. In the meantime, there are issues of free will, God's ineffable plan, and the ever-present temptation to despair to be dealt with.

Dr. Moran's prose is as amazing as ever, moving from comedy to tragedy deftly and swiftly. If you're interested in a moving story where soulless girls grapple with the Devil while the Devil's child, who mistakenly believes herself to be a ninja, considers seppuku, this is the ebook for you.

An Unclean Legacy edition by Jenna Katerin Moran Humor Entertainment eBooks Reviews

Sorcerers, fallen angels, ninjas, dishonored knights, unicorns, pixies - Jenna Moran took a grab bag of interesting and cool things, mixed them all together into a story that is epic and personal. The stories weave between biblical, fairy tale, fantasy, and personal and manages to blend a quirky sense of humor with introspection into what makes us human, failures and triumphs and tragedies. It is the best new fiction I've read this year.
An Unclean Legacy is a dark and intense story, one which I had to set aside a few times for a break. Jenna Moran's writing style is unique; readers tend to either love it or hate it. I feel that her light and economical prose is suitable for grim tales like this. If that sounds appealing I recommend you give her a try.

An Unclean Legacy is one of the most creative works of fantasy I've had the pleasure to read (and reread). Like Zelazny at his best, Jenna Moran has created a setting and characters who seem at first familiar and yet become something entirely new. Also like the best Zelazny, An Unclean Legacy is a longer read than its length suggests, jumping around in ways that reward careful attention and multiple read-throughs. With elaborate philosophical discussions, rapid transitions between the serious and the silly, and Moran's trademark pop-culture and mythology references, this may not be a book for everyone, but it is absolutely, unreservedly a book for me.
Once again Jenna Moran gives us special insight to her fabulous imagination through her first novel An Unclean legacy. The story encompasses many tales from her short story site Hitherby Dragons, but leads you deeper down the rabbit hole and into a fantastic world of devils and angels, gods and sorcerers, magic and damnation. A realm where every power has a human side and every devil falls in love.

A sure fire hit for fans of her earlier works, and an opportunity for new readers to discover how Moran's flowing prose paints a picture that is both beautiful and wonderfully unique.
There's nobody else like Jenna Moran.

I'm pretty sure this is literally true; I've never seen writing like hers, which deftly combines deepest tragedy, complex mythology, and pop culture into something profoundly moving and fantastic. Maybe Neil Gaiman can pull it off. On a good day.

This is the story of a wizard, and his seven children, and his lost bride who (among her other virtues) wanted to put the wings of eagles onto wolverines. It is about the family of the devil; of blue essentials, which will make your head hurt if you think about them too hard; of walking mechanical houses, and the nature of choice, of evil, of damnation, and ninjutsu. Ultimately, it is almost impossible to put down, even at the very end.

There's also a centipede who is sworn to destroy Christmas. I'm just saying.
If you've already read the shorter version that was posted on the web a while back, all you probably need to know is that it's Unclean Legacy, but fleshed out and with a lot more time spent on the characterization and setting backstory.

If you haven't, it's a book about dysfunctional families, angels and demons and several less easily categorizable entities, twins, promises, and inheritances of several sorts. The tone ranges from amusing to emotionally moving and back without feeling disjointed or random, in a way that reminds me of Jack Vance's better stories.

If you like Jack Vance and Lord Dunsany, it's definitely worth a read.
I am named after a poet who won the Nobel prize the year I was born. Rather, my middle name is named after him (Alexis St. Leger-Leger, better known as St, John Perse). Very rarely have I read works that truly form their own reality in an unbridled stream of creativity that makes me realize what can underlie the world we think we live in. Perse was one such person, and I am reminded a bit of his work by Ms. Moran's work.

What Ms. Moran's work does in this book is to wrap a story about creation, salvation, damnation, angels and devils, and the interplay of family ties around a world that is vibrant in "newness" but familiar at the same time. Writers like James Joyce, for example (Finnegan's Wake) sometimes so densely pack their prose with meaning that a separate concordance is needed to figure out all of the allusions. Unclean Legacy is not as complex as all that, but there are sections in there (the "back story" of creation about 1/3 the way through comes to mind) that are absolutely fascinating in their interpretation of the "powers" that moved in centuries past.

I will leave this review with one more thought If you enjoyed writers like Neil Gaiman dealing with gods that roam the Earth but still retain some of their power (American Gods, Anansi Boys, etc.), Ms. Moran evokes well that same "playing with dangerous themes" that those books deal with. I really enjoy books that seem to draw back the veil and attempt to show the impossibly potent forces that move behind our perceptions of reality.
